Then she also became part of Pyaasa (1957), Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) etc. In her 50-year career won numerous awards.
Bhanu Athaiya won the Oscar Award for Best Costume Design in 1982 for her work film Gandhi and became the First Indian Oscar Award winner. the Gandhi biography directed by Richard Attenborough in 1982. She also won two National Film Awards in 1991 and 2002

Bhanu Athaiya was born on 28 April 1929 in Kolhapur Maharashtra British India. She was born in a Marathi Brahmin family. Her father’s name was Annasaheb Rajopadhye and her mother’s name was Shantabai Rajopadhye. She was the third child of seven and her father was a Painter and photographer from a wealthy family. her father died in 1940 when she was 11 years old.
Bhanu traveled to Mumbai when she was 17 and lived with a woman whose mother just so happened to work at Eve’s Weekly, a well-known magazine. She won the Usha Deshmukh Gold medal in 1951 for the artwork Titled ‘Lady In Repose’ while she was studying at Sir J J School of Art.

Bhanu started her career in the early stages as an artist while she was studying at Sir J J School of Arts, Mumbai. Later she worked as a freelance fashion illustrator for women’s magazines “Eve’s Weekly” and “Fashion & Beauty”.
First Oscar Winner in India Bhanu Athaiya started work in a boutique and from there she discovered the skill of designing clothes. Her costume designing career began by designing costumes for Guru Dutt’s Film C.I.D. in 1956.
